They call it "a temple to the liberated taco," and now Dallas-based
Velvet Taco has landed in Buckhead and erected one of their taco temples across from the St.
Regis Hotel. This is a fast-casual restaurant
that exudes a fun, irreverent vibe but takes their "globe-trotting tacos" very
seriously. Of course, a couple of "Kick
Ass" margaritas make it all the more fun to enjoy.
Everything starts, as you
might imagine, with a hand-made tortilla which comes in several varieties-flour,
corn, waffle-style, maroon-colored hibiscus corn and even a lettuce wrap for
you Keto-fans. Indeed, their motto "set
my tacos free," applies as the kaleidoscope of flavors break many traditional
molds.
Build your own or try one of
the inventive concoctions like the Spicy Tikka Chicken, Fried Paneer,
Picnic Chicken, Falafel, Cuban Pig, Annatto Shredded Pork or Ahi Poke tacos. These units are rich, full of explosive flavors and are incredibly filling. Everything is made from scratch, slow-roasted, smoked or pickled inhouse-and you can tell. And brunch addicts can scratch two places with
one taco-- the Chicken & Waffle
made with fried chicken tenders and peppered
bacon in a waffle tortilla will do the trick. Also bucking the Mexican norm be sure to try
the Red Curry Coconut Queso, the creamy
'Elote' Corn and a decadent Red
Velvet Cake (don't miss the erotic oil painting of a voluptuous Marie Anionite stuffing her face with red velvet cake adorns the wall).
Pro tip: Velvet Taco offers pick-up service, including
their "secret" Backdoor Chicken - a whole Rotisserie Chicken, two
sides of 'Elote' Corn, six corn tortillas, roasted corn pico de gallo and heat
sauce. Usually $20, "BDC" is sold for $10 on Mondays only.
Open 7 days a week for lunch at 11 am (and brunch on weekends
starting at 10 am), night owls, revelers, and midnight snackers will adore Velvet Taco's nocturnal offerings: open until midnight Sunday-Monday, 2 am Tuesday-Wednesday and 3 am Thursday-Saturday.
Multiple visits to Velvet Taco are requisite as you will never conquer the menu in one or two sittings. The good news is that the menu's wide-variety, consistent freshness, kid- and adult-friendliness, ease of getting in and out and reasonable prices, you should have zero reasons not to make it a regular in your casual, quick-serve rotation.
