As many of you know there is a current ad campaign for a deli with Danny Devito that talks about a "sub above." Well one of my favorite guys in the Atlanta restaurant scene, Maestro Pizzaiolo Chef Luca Varuni of Varuni Napoli, has created some subs that are WAY above. If you don't know about Varuni Napoli, this is a REAL Neapolitan pizzeria—wood-fired southern pizzas coming out of special ovens flown over from the Motherland. And Chef Luca is a real Neapolitan himself. He began cooking at age 14, and early in his professional career trained under the renowned maestro pizzaiolo Enzo Coccia of La Notizia - the first Michelin-rated pizzeria in the world. After studying traditional Mediterranean and Neapolitan cooking in Sorrento, Varuni brought his talents to the United States, opening the first Varuni Napoli location in 2014 in Midtown Atlanta, followed by a second location in Krog Street Market in 2017.
A couple of years ago they created some of my favorite sandwiches at the Krog Street location but just recently they started offering them in Midtown as well. There's the eggplant Parmesan with lightly fried eggplant, buffalo mozzarella, basil, and San Marzano tomato sauce; The meatball Parmesan sandwich features homemade meatballs, buffalo mozzarella, basil, and San Marzano tomato sauce; The Goodfella features mortadella, coppa, salami, soppressata, shredded lettuce, tomato, provolone, oregano, hot cherry peppers, extra virgin olive oil, and vinaigrette; and the Zingara features buffalo mozzarella, Prosciutto di Parma, tomatoes, romaine, oregano, and mayonnaise. The bread is incredible. The ingredients are absolutely the best you can get and they even grow their own hydroponic basil. This guy's food has been on CNN, Food Network, "Good Morning America," Pizza Today, PMQ Pizza Magazine, Thrillist, and more.
